What To Know About Pap Smears

Pap smears play a crucial role in detecting abnormalities in the cervix, which can indicate early signs of cervical cancer or other health issues.

Your gynecological health is important. To see an OBGYN in the Middleburg and Palatka, FL areas, visit our providers at First Coast Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The Importance of Pap Smears

A Pap smear involves collecting cells from the cervix. These cells are then examined under a microscope to check for any abnormalities.

The primary goal of a Pap smear is to detect precancerous or cancerous cells early - this is key for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. Detecting abnormalities early greatly increases the chances of successful treatment and reduces the risk of cervical cancer progression.

When to Get a Pap Smear

While the recommended age to start Pap smear screenings varies depending on factors such as individual health history and guidelines, in general, the age of 21 is recommended (and continuing every few years after). If you have certain risk factors or previous abnormal results, you might need more frequent screenings.

To learn more about risk factors, visit our OBGYN, Dr. Tchuisse, at First Coast Obstetrics & Gynecology, Middleburg and Palatka, FL.

What To Expect

A Pap smear is a relatively simple and quick procedure that can be done during a routine pelvic exam.

During the exam, you'll lie on your back on an examination table with your feet placed in stirrups. Your OBGYN will insert a speculum into your vagina to gently widen the vaginal canal, allowing access to the cervix.

Using a small brush or spatula, your OBGYN will collect cells from the cervix by gently scraping its surface. This part might cause slight discomfort or pressure but is typically not painful.

The collected cells are then sent to a laboratory for analysis. It may take a few weeks to receive the results and hear back from your OBGYN.
