Importance of Regular Pap Smears

There are few – if any – women who enjoy the idea of a Pap smear. They feel a bit awkward and aren’t the most comfortable experience, but they are necessary. Pap smears are performed to collect cells that help your OB/GYN screen for cervical cancer. It can help address any changes and potential issues before they become a problem. Having regular Pap smears increases the chances of success.

How Often Is “Regular” With Pap Smears?

You now know why it’s important to have regular Pap smears, but you’re probably still wondering what regular means exactly. Previously, it was recommended that you receive one every year. However, those guidelines have changed as no benefits were found to having them so frequently.

In most cases, a Pap smear is not necessary before the age of 21. It is typically recommended, however, that girls between the ages of 13 and 15 have their first gynecology appointment. Testing is not usually carried out at these appointments. The gynecologist will simply determine if there are any potential issues and recommend any tests or treatments if they seem necessary.

From age 21 to 65, ladies should have Pap smears every three years. If you’ve had no issues and nothing abnormal on previous Pap smears, you probably won’t need any at all after age 65.

Keep in mind that these are the recommended guidelines. If any issues are detected or there are signs of potential problems, Dr. Tchuisse at First Coast Obstetrics & Gynecology in Middleburg and Palatka, FL might recommend having a Pap smear or other testing more often. Remember that these tests are for your health, so it’s important that you follow any recommendations.

If you haven’t had a Pap smear in a while, it’s important to make it a priority. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Tchuisse at First Coast Obstetrics & Gynecology in Middleburg and Palatka, FL by calling (386) 325-5699.
